Signs and symbols
There are many signs and symbols important to the Jewish religion. The most well known include:
- The Menorah, a seven branched candelabrum. It is said to be a symbol of Israel and the mission to be ‘a light unto the nations’.
- A Yarmulke or Kippah, is a small hat type used for Jews to cover their heads whilst praying in ancient times. It is now used mainly to differentiate Jews from Christians and is a custom rather than a commandment.
- The Magen David, Shield or Star of David is the most common symbol recognized with Judaism today. The symbol supposedly represents the shape of King David’s shield.
